Making complex information compelling

International students often struggle to understand the Dutch healthcare system. The rules, required steps, and differences between EU/EEA and non-EU/EEA students are unclear, which can cause confusion and uncertainty when they need medical care. The challenge was to turn this complex and unfamiliar system into information that is easy to understand and immediately useful for students from different backgrounds.

A Consistent, Illustrative Approach.

I created an explainer animation using a playful, illustrative visual style to make the information more approachable and enjoyable to watch. The animation explains key differences between EU/EEA and non-EU/EEA students and guides viewers through common healthcare situations step by step. By combining clear visuals with an voice over, the animation helps students navigate the system with confidence.

The Proces

01. Briefing & Input. The project started with a clear briefing from the client. I received the core assets, including a script and voice-over, which were reviewed and debriefed to fully understand the goals, target audience, and key message of the explainer.

02. Research & Design Requirements. Based on the briefing, design requirements were defined. These requirements formed the foundation for all creative decisions and ensured clarity, consistency, and accessibility throughout the animation.

03. Ideation & Visual Direction. Next, I brainstormed visual approaches and created inspiration boards to explore different styles and moods. This phase helped determine the most suitable visual direction for explaining complex information in a clear and engaging way.

04. Style & Storyboard. A final visual style was established and documented in a style guide. With this direction in place, a storyboard was created to map out the narrative, pacing, and visual flow of the animation.

05. Animation & Sound Design. Finally, all visual assets were designed and animated in sync with the voice-over. Music and sound effects were added to enhance clarity, rhythm, and engagement, resulting in a complete and cohesive explainer animation.
